Three Kings: Saul
This Week’s Message – Three Kings: Saul
When someone says to us the phrase ‘3 Kings’ our minds immediately go to the three kings or magi who visited the baby Jesus after being informed of his birth by the presence of a star.
But they are not the only three kings that are important in the salvation history of humankind as laid out by God in his word, the bible. Three other kings played a pivotal role and this Sunday we are kicking off a new sermon series called “Three Kings.” These three kings will lead us up to Christ the King Sunday which is the last Sunday of the church year and the last Sunday before the beginning of Advent.
Saul was Israel’s first king. God didn’t want his people to have a king, God himself wanted to be their king. Israel however, felt that they wanted a king to lead them into battle like the nations around them. In one sense, they believed that a visible king would make them more respectable to the nations around them. Their desire for an earthly king doesn’t go well for them, at least not with the first one, Saul.
